Oct. 27, 2007 will be a historic day for redfish anglers in Texas’ Lower Laguna Madre area. On that day, the first annual Lower Laguna Madre Redfish Championship tournament will be held and is poised to set the bar for cash payout tournaments in South Texas.
Never before has a tournament in the South Texas region awarded as much in cash prizes as the LLMRC’s $7,500. With pro, adult amateur and junior amateur divisions, the LLMRC is expected to draw in excess of 500 participants.
Set to be held at Pirate’s Landing Fishing Pier in Port Isabel, the LLMRC will award cash to the top three finishers in each adult category. Adult competitors will also be eligible for hourly cash prizes. Junior anglers will compete for assorted tackle as well as rod and reel combinations.
The top finisher in the pro division will win $2,500, while second and third place pros will receive $1,000 and $500 respectively.
Both pro and amateur division participants are eligible for the $200 hourly prizes award to the largest redfish weighed during each hour of the competition.
Junior divion winners will receive All-Star rods and Pflueger reels, along with a complete tackle selection. The overall winners from the pro, adult amateur and junior divisions will also receive trophies. Anglers may fish anywhere in the Lower Laguna Madre from the Land Cut south to South Bay. Pro division anglers can only use artificial lures, while amateur anglers may use natural or artificial baits.
All fish must conform to Texas Parks & Wildlife legal limits in order to be eligible. No oversize redfish will be eligible.
The first 500 paid entrants will receive a free t-shirt. All participants – adult and junior – will receive free admission to the fishing pier and 15 percent off all bait and tackle at the pier on the day of the event. There will also be a number of giveaways during the weigh-in.
